History

Long, informal learning sessions in the early hours of the morning...

In late summer and early autumn in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1997, Alfredo Dipacce, then a teenager starting his first year of high school, and his father, Enrique Dipacce, an electronics engineer, were sharing their passion for new technologies, and especially software programming for the devices of the time, in the quiet of the night —a time when poets, great writers, artists, and inventors have found their greatest inspiration.

Their goal was to carry out a project in a programming language that at that time was considered one of the most powerful and with great potential for the future.

That language is C++ and object-oriented programming (OOP).

They already had a long history of programming in other languages and as a final test for themselves they carried out a project to establish their entire learning curve with that language.

To finalize this stage of learning and mastering the C++ language, Enrique decided to remake, or create in his own way, a version of a classic arcade game, the fabulous and very famous Asteroids.

Thus Nave Space I was born in 1997. On a cold June 15, 1998, the first version of Nave Space was completed in a small house in the Villa Española neighborhood of Montevideo. It was perfectly playable on PCs with Microsoft DOS 6.22 and Macintosh. Later, the code was updated to allow it to be played on Windows.

Thus concluded their training as C++ programmers, adding to their knowledge in a technological world that was growing and changing at breakneck speed.

If you prefer, we can send you a copy of Nave Space I for Microsoft Windows so you can experience playing the original game designed and developed by Alfredo and Enrique Dipacce in 1998!

This is what Nave Space I from 1998 looks like in 2026, running on the Microsoft Windows 11 console.

The same adaptation of the original 1998 code that Alfredo Dipacce achieved in 2012, ten years after his father's death and almost 15 years after he had first done it.
